I have researched some of the possible directors to be involved in my music video:
Sophie Muller
Sophie Muller is a British director, this means she will be more accessable as my artist is also British. She is the director of the video which has given me the original inspiration for the narrative in my video, P!NK's 'Family Portrait' (2001)
This video also includes real life issues which are much more uncommon to include in music videos. P!NK displays a young girl experiencing her parents divorce and the possible repurcusions it may have on her as an impressionable child.
More recently, Muller has directed videos for:
Rihanna (Stay, 2013)
Beyonce (I was here, 2012)
Alicia Keys (Girl on fire, 2012)
Noah and the whale (L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N, 2011)
Mickey Smith
Mickey Smith is an Irish director, he has worked with Ben Howard a number of times for videos such as 'Only Love' and 'Esmerelda'. It is especially important to me that he has worked with my artist before because he understands the concepts and mood of Ben Howard video's already. 'Esmerelda' is one video of Howards that captures some of the darker tones that are represented in my video.
Smith has also won the Kinsale Sharks International Young Directors Award (2012), Best Sports film, Vimeo Awards 2012 and best Cinematography - Rhode Island Film Festival 2011. He will help create the beautiful imagery that i want to display in my video, as it is a big part of my genre's codes and conventions.
^^ Dark Side of the Lens (Short film): This shows Smith's style of cinematography that is so intimate and intricate towards his subject. This is the style i will take on in my video for 'To Be Alone'.
A friend and I chose to take the opportunity to practice some filming and editing on a snow day.
Unfortunately we did not have a tripod to hand so the footage is all handheld. This actually gives a handicam effect and adds to the disjointed mood of the piece. Enjoy:
Through looking at other videos of my artists music, it gives me an idea to his style and the typical locations and shots for the song.
This research has showed me how Ben Howard utilises the mood of his tracks to depict the mood for the video. He uses a lot of imagery, water features in most of the videos i have watched in different ways. Brighter colours are used for the more chirpy songs and dull colours for the darker ones. 'To Be Alone' is quite dark and so my images will match the mood. I also have a feature of water in my planned video, the beach.
Although the codes and conventions for this genre state that it is rare to see the artist in the video, Ben Howard often appears in his. I have used this to my advantage by also including 'the artist' (played by my actor) in the performance element of my video. Ben Howard does not often have a performance element in his music videos, however to make my piece more versatile i have decided to include a small portion of performance.
We can see the clear alteration in mood from videos such as Only Love and Keep Your Head Up compared to Esmerelda - showing that Howard has both upbeat songs, mostly with major chords, as well as rather slow or songs in more minor chords with a darker feel to it. To Be Alone has bursts of heavy beats as well as mellow, quite calm melodies. This means i can have a variety of moods, shots and colours in my video.
Here is page one of my storyboard which basically shows the establishing shots of my artist running through the woods and the beach and house where the video will be set.
Page 2 shows the artist in close-ups as he recalls old times with his girlfriend, these are flashbacks where they are happy however the middle box of this page shows the two arguing. I will have these punctuating the happy memories to show the overall narrative in a nonlinear way.
Page 3 focusses on the artist in a temper where he messes up his girlfriends room. It also shows closeups of imagery such as the woods and more happy flashbacks.
This shows the artist in present day upset and reflecting on his broken relationship, i have planned a some performance shots where the artist will be singing in the darkness and this will illustrate the lyrics which read 'in the darkness'.
Here are more happy flashbacks contrasted with unhappy ones and present day shots of the artist running through the woods again, the narrative is still being revealed.
This is mainly imagery and closeups of the locations where the artist is reflecting and more performance and flashback shots.
A variety of shots are planned on this page which include long, mid and different angle shots.
The final part of my music video is set to be ambiguous as the artist is still reflecting on the past and suddenly looks up to see his girlfriend, who then disappears.
