INSPIRATION

I have researched some of the possible directors to be involved in my music video:

Sophie Muller

Sophie Muller is a British director, this means she will be more accessable as my artist is also British. She is the director of the video which has given me the original inspiration for the narrative in my video, P!NK's 'Family Portrait' (2001)

This video also includes real life issues which are much more uncommon to include in music videos. P!NK displays a young girl experiencing her parents divorce and the possible repurcusions it may have on her as an impressionable child.

More recently, Muller has directed videos for:
Rihanna (Stay, 2013)
Beyonce (I was here, 2012)
Alicia Keys (Girl on fire, 2012)
Noah and the whale (L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N, 2011)

Mickey Smith

Mickey Smith is an Irish director, he has worked with Ben Howard a number of times for videos such as 'Only Love' and 'Esmerelda'. It is especially important to me that he has worked with my artist before because he understands the concepts and mood of Ben Howard video's already. 'Esmerelda' is one video of Howards that captures some of the darker tones that are represented in my video.

Smith has also won the Kinsale Sharks International Young Directors Award (2012), Best Sports film, Vimeo Awards 2012 and best Cinematography - Rhode Island Film Festival 2011. He will help create the beautiful imagery that i want to display in my video, as it is a big part of my genre's codes and conventions.

^^ Dark Side of the Lens (Short film): This shows Smith's style of cinematography that is so intimate and intricate towards his subject. This is the style i will take on in my video for 'To Be Alone'.

Practice...

A friend and I chose to take the opportunity to practice some filming and editing on a snow day.

Unfortunately we did not have a tripod to hand so the footage is all handheld. This actually gives a handicam effect and adds to the disjointed mood of the piece. Enjoy:

Preparations...

There are some shots i was unsure about completing, so i researched some tutorials to help me...

I have also been looking at Vimeo Video School:

http://vimeo.com/videoschool/archive/dslr

This helps me get ideas on how to film effectively and proffessionally with the equipment i have.

Other videos by Ben Howard

Through looking at other videos of my artists music, it gives me an idea to his style and the typical locations and shots for the song.

This research has showed me how Ben Howard utilises the mood of his tracks to depict the mood for the video. He uses a lot of imagery, water features in most of the videos i have watched in different ways. Brighter colours are used for the more chirpy songs and dull colours for the darker ones. 'To Be Alone' is quite dark and so my images will match the mood. I also have a feature of water in my planned video, the beach.
Although the codes and conventions for this genre state that it is rare to see the artist in the video, Ben Howard often appears in his. I have used this to my advantage by also including 'the artist' (played by my actor) in the performance element of my video. Ben Howard does not often have a performance element in his music videos, however to make my piece more versatile i have decided to include a small portion of performance.
We can see the clear alteration in mood from videos such as Only Love and Keep Your Head Up compared to Esmerelda - showing that Howard has both upbeat songs, mostly with major chords, as well as rather slow or songs in more minor chords with a darker feel to it.  To Be Alone has bursts of heavy beats as well as mellow, quite calm melodies. This means i can have a variety of moods, shots and colours in my video.

STORYBOARD

Here is page one of my storyboard which basically shows the establishing shots of my artist running through the woods and the beach and house where the video will be set.

Page 2 shows the artist in close-ups as he recalls old times with his girlfriend, these are flashbacks where they are happy however the middle box of this page shows the two arguing. I will have these punctuating the happy memories to show the overall narrative in a nonlinear way.
Page 3 focusses on the artist in a temper where he messes up his girlfriends room. It also shows closeups of imagery such as the woods and more happy flashbacks.

This shows the artist in present day upset and reflecting on his broken relationship, i have planned a some performance shots where the artist will be singing in the darkness and this will illustrate the lyrics which read 'in the darkness'.

Here are more happy flashbacks contrasted with unhappy ones and present day shots of the artist running through the woods again, the narrative is still being revealed.

This is mainly imagery and closeups of the locations where the artist is reflecting and more performance and flashback shots.

A variety of shots are planned on this page which include long, mid and different angle shots.

The final part of my music video is set to be ambiguous as the artist is still reflecting on the past and suddenly looks up to see his girlfriend, who then disappears.

BEAT SHEET

TREATMENT SHEET

A-level Media Studies:   Advanced Production

TREATMENT:  PROPOSAL FOR MUSIC VIDEO

Proposed Title/Song: To Be Alone by Ben Howard

Synopsis of song lyrics: The Lyrics leave the storyline open to interpretation: the artist talks about being alone and not needing anybody in the darkness. These connote negative elements of relationships, for example, arguments within romantic or family life.

Proposed storyline and characters: The video focusses on the lyrics, but with a twist. The narrative is not typical of the genre’s codes and conventions; it focusses on the singers family and his relationship with them. It tells of a family break-up behind closed doors, as the older brother (also the artist) reflects on when he left the family because of arguments, we now see the younger sister going through exactly the same thing. As the parents realise the sister has left, the first person to blame is the brother (artist) - leading to a reflection of both the artist and the sisters thoughts about their personal circumstances. The video closes with the sister leaving her place of refuge - therefore open to interpretation of where she goes, and a flashback of an old home movie from the artists childhood.

Setting: (time and place) The video will be set in the modern day, in locations which are local and common for people to be. These will include the woods, the beach and the homes of my characters. We will see the singer and others in the video in each of these places as they reflect on the recent events in their family.

Length: (time and shots) There will be no introductory narrative or any extra at the end of the song, the length of my audio track is about 4 minutes and 15 seconds therefore all of the narrative i need to include will have space.

Format: Digital and edited on Final Cut Pro X and iMovie

Style

Genre, mood, influences, claims to originality: The genre of my video is indie/rock just as Ben Howard’s other videos. I have been influenced by the work of Sophie Muller who directed P!NK’s video for ‘family portrait’, as it also focusses on family disputes rather than romantic ones. Elements of it will be quite dark in that we see what goes on with this family behind closed doors, the actor playing the sister will add to this by looking and being vulnerable.

Camerawork/type of shots: Long shots of the parents from an onlooker’s perspective shows the young girl’s point of view. Linked with close-up’s of the singer and the sister as they are the main features in the video and their emotion needs to be portrayed clearly.

Length of shots/editing: The video’s tempo and rhythm varies throughout, therefore so will my shot lengths. I will edit the video to match the audio rhythm; enhancing the lyrics and mood of the piece.

Movement and action: The artist and sister will often be seen walking through the woods or on a beach, sometimes running as the pace increases.

Visual qualities: The video will be shot in colour, however flashbacks to the artist and sisters early childhood will be in black and white - this will emphasise the happiness with their father. The artist will be seen in modern, fashionable attire which will appeal to the female audience. Props will be used inside the abandoned house and the sister looks through her old belongings.

Handling of narrative: The narrative will be clearly portrayed and montage editing will meant hat the audience need to work out the storyline. This will also give the video a repeatability factor. The audience will be kept on their toes so that they will want to watch until the end. Flashbacks will set the time and make the viewers aware of the characters’ history.

Target audience: The target audience will be those of Ben Howard’s existing fans and those who are alternative music fans who like to decode their own message in the media and like to work out the narrative for themselves. They will be aged between 16 and 30 and are both male and female.

Technical aspects

Production methods: To act as director, producer and editor, focus on the lighting and props as well as risk assessments and shooting scripts. The shoot will last over a total of 4 days to get the specific shots needed.
Equipment: Canon EOS 500D for both shooting HD video footage and my photoshoot for ancillary products to the video. Lighting will be used in the interior locations and Final Cut Pro X will be used to edit the footage.

Locations/studio: Exterior locations include the local beach and woods. Interior locations will be the family home, the abandoned home and the artists flat.

Resources

People: Angus Tookey as the artist. Rhiannon Eve as the sister. Glenn Tookey and Elisa Hunt as the parents.

Time: Rehearsal plus performance time. There will be limited time available to use certain actors.
Budget: Very low budget, petrol money for driving to locations: £50.

Rationale

This video will open up Ben Howard’s fan base to a new side of the artist that is seen to be both protective and vulnerable. This will attract all ranges of audience members, from teenage girls to men in their 20’s who have been through similar situations. The video is unique to all other videos in the industry currently and will therefore stand out as original.

MY SONG CHOICE.

I don't need nobody, Oh no, i don't need nobody
Oh, i don't need nobody to be alone,
To be alone.

And in the darkness a shallow voice
And it hears all.
I bite my tongue, there is a fever,
I will not let it go.

I don't need nobody, Oh no, I don't need nobody
Oh, i don't need nobody to be alone,
To be alone.

And in the darkness a shallow voice
And it hears all.
I bite my tongue, there is a fever,
I will not let it show.

And in the darkness a shallow voice
And it hears all.
I bite my tongue, there is a fever,
I will not let it show.

I don't need nobody, Oh no, i don't need nobody
Oh i don't need nobody to be alone,
To be alone, to be alone.

A study of YouTube as a platform for promoting musical artists

‘ A FEW YEARS AGO NEW MUSICIANS PROMOTED THEMSELVES VIA ‘MYSPACE’ NOW ‘MYSPACE’ IS REDUNDANT.  YOUTUBE IS THE PRIME PLATFORM FOR MUSICAL ARTISTS TO PROMOTE THEMSELVES AND THE SUCCESS OF ‘GANGNAM STYLE’ PROVES THIS’ AGREE OR DISAGREE?

Once upon a time, Myspace was the social networking site ideal for up and coming musicians. Just as Twitter is now, Myspace used to be the most popular platform for teenagers to create a webpage to express themselves. It allows you to share videos and mp4 music on your profile, which is why it is ideal for amateur musicians to promote themselves. Many have been noticed through this platform and Colbie Caillat is just one of them.

Colbie Caillat - Bubbly:
The popularity of Myspace has decreased rapidly since 2008, just as YouTube made its debut. Some may even state that Myspace is now redundant, where it once had over 100 million global users, its UK audience has halved to 3.3 million monthly visitors in July 2010 (Telegraph). Compared to competitors, Myspace is failing by 2004 when Facebook was launched. Facebook had 500 million registered users and Twitter (launched 2006) already had over 100 million users, surpassing Myspace in its peak, however these sites were only competing with Myspace as social network sites. YouTube is the platform which directly competes with Myspace as a music platform. These days YouTube is the most effective form of promotion for new artists.
We can measure the difference in value of YouTube and Myspace by the price that each was sold for to a new corporation: Myspace was sold to Rupert Murdoch in 2005 for $580 million whereas YouTube was sold to Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion. This does not necessarily mean that YouTube is the prime platform for musical artists to promote themselves, but it does show how much more it is worth, suggesting that it would be a better platform for the artists.

We can see that YouTube is a more effective platform purely through the success of the recent hit, Gangnam Style:

This spoof video went viral almost immediatley after it was released in July 2012. On September 24th the video had 262 million views and made history of the most liked video ever. The power of YouTube publicity is clearly presented here and it increases as the Korean artists went on to be signed by Justin Bieber's management, performed on a number of successful US shows and collaborated with Jill Stuart (fashion designer) to create a Gangnam inspired fashion line. Psy's success is remarkable and this would be nothing if not for YouTube. In comparison, Colbie Caillat is still relatively unknown by a large audience, whereas Psy is a global superstar after only 5 months.
The Guardian released an article about the popular song, saying that "Gangnam Style's lyrics may be in Korean, but its visuals are in clear American. It is a pastiche of pop video cliches so familiar you almost feel you know what Psy is singing." This statement proves true, and may be one of the reasons that Gangnam Style has become as famous as it is. The clear stereotypical American style of the video draws the audience in and the pop video cliche pastiche is what ultimately entertains them. Not many viewers will actually know where or what Gangnam is, yet they still buy into the performance and so passively participate in the world reknown dance that resembles a horse impression.

The video now currently has 666,395,251 views, the democratic community of YouTube also means that thousands, if not billions of fans will have made video responses or parodies of Gangnam Style. This is something that Myspace prohibits, meaning that users will generally migrate towards YouTube rather than Myspace to get a feel of community. This connects to Michael Wesch's 'Anthropoly of YouTube' which talks about cultural inversions. This basically means that users are looking to express their individualism, whist still highly valuing community. Connection without constraint is something that YouTube offers its users, whereas we could argue that Myspace is more like suburbia; everyone is in one place, but noone is really connected to much because Myspace is now disconnected from the major media platforms.

This image shows that myspace is the least active platform in terms of video viewing per day.

I would say that it is definitley accurate to state that Youtube is now the major platform in terms of music artists. Myspace is considered redundant by most web users whereas YouTube has atleast 24 hours of video uploaded and exceeds 2 billion views a day. The viral success of Gangnam style proves this idea undoubtedly, i think it is safe to say that Myspace has seen its peak, leaving YouTube as its succesor in playing a major role in the music industry.

HISTORY OF MUSIC VIDEO.

THE HISTORY OF MUSIC VIDEO - FLOW CHART.

CONTEMPORY vs CLASSIC

Queen : Bohemian Rhapsody (1981) -------- Rita Ora : How We Do (2012)

VS

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody is entirely performance based, there is no narrative whatsoever and this is the first difference to a contemporary music video. Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the first major music videos and in this time a video was used to perform and promote the song, therefore a narrative was not generally included. Queen's video uses a lot of special effects and this would have been a major breakthrough for music videos in the 1980's, they are perhaps what makes this video so iconic to the band.
The video itself is very dark in lighting; the shot right at the beginning with the four 'floating heads' is portrayed by top-lighting to the faces. This usually gives a glamorous ecceft on the subject of the shot by creating shadows onto the nose, mouth and body, however in this group shot the band has a more sinister appearance. There are a few shots like this where the background is in complete darkness and all you see is the performer and their instrument, the brightest that the video gets must be in a shot where the band are on stage. The connotations of the video being mainly low lighting are depressing and dangerous or sinister. I think this connects with the lyrics of the song which are not particularly happy, they talk about throwing life away and wishing to have never been born.

This shot shows a special effect, others
include partially dissolving into different
shots so that both images can still be seen
and duplicating an image onto the page
multiple times.

Many of the shots are also Silhouettes, this in particular shot is narrating the lyrics which read "I see a little silhouetto of a man..." The silhouette is of Freddie Mercury as he is the main feature in this video, probably because he is the lead singer and videos more or less focus on the singer and not so much the musicians.

On the other hand, Rita Ora's video for How We Do which was released in 2011 has a different approach to the music video. Like Bohemian Rhapsody, How We Do is also performance based, however there is also an element of narrative in there which the main video cross cuts to throughout. In terms of lighting and colour, the video is much brighter and includes loud colours which connote a more light hearted storyline and denotes fun. We see Rita Ora in a number of different locations during the video, one where she is alone and it is purely performance, another where she is at a party and the last is at what looks like a studio with people throwing paint everywhere. This video also includes special effects just as Bohemian Rhapsody does, however Queen's video would probably not have a black and white effect as How We Do does because the 1980s had not long seen colour appear on screens so a black and white effect may seem like a regression. However, in the current day and age music videos include effects such as these because it is so rare now to see it.
There are also shots of the action at a UV party which is very modern, the colours are ultraviolet and so this affect on the video makes it even more lively and colourful to watch.

In conclusion, Music videos have evolved and become a lot more high-tec over the years. For example, How We Do has a better quality picture than Bohemian Rhapsody and the colours are a lot brighter. The film sets also look as if they have become higher budget too. Queen's video would have been very high budget for the time in which it was created, however in comarison to Rita Ora's video we see that it is infact very basic whereas Rita is filmed in different locations and in different costumes in almost every take.

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF STILL SHOT.

I have chosen to do a textual analysis of a still from Justin Bieber's Beauty and a Beat video:

The Beauty and a Beat video was released in October of 2012. This video is different to many of his others because the camera is in a style which looks as if it is a handheld camera. His other videos are much more like mini movies, telling a story. Whereas this video is entirely performance based as we can see from this still shot of Justin staring at the camera singing with dancers behind him. In this image we can see that Justin Bieber is holding the camera, this handicam type view makes the shot look very informal and almost amateur. The scenery around him is a swimming pool and what looks like a bridge or platform over it which he and some girls are dancing on. The atmosphere looks like a lively party and it looks like a hot or fairly exotic country. The climate of the setting is suggested by what Justin Bieber is wearing at what looks like night time in a water park. His casual clothes expose his tattoo on the left arm which holds the camera. The fact that he has a tattoo connotes a free spirit and artistic person. It is also quite iconic as there has been a lot of exposure of his tattoos recently on social networking sites. Even Bieber's hair connotes his intentions as a musician. The iconic Bieber sweepy frringe has been ditched and he now goes for a more sophisticated quiff. This suggests that he is ready to be thought of differently, maybe taken more seriously rather than the teenage pop sensation with a high pitched voice who everyone finds adorable. Bieber seems to be urging his audience to think more about his sex appeal in this video rather than his cute factor. The girls around him are supporting this idea because they are dressed in summer/swim wear which means very little clothing is worn and quite a bit of skin is shown. As Bieber is surrounded by these dancing girls the connotations are that he is a ladies man and gets a lot of female attention. The name of the song is a parody and inter-textual reference to the Disney film Beauty and the Beast. This could connote Justin Biebers Disney connections that everyone seems to make, he has never appeared on Disney Channel yet he is constantly categorised as a 'Squeaky Clean Disney Kid' because of the image that he first promoted and his relations with other Disney Stars such as Selena Gomez.

FINAL COMPARISON

Andrew Goodwins theories include: hyperconsiousness, parody, inter-textuality, pastiche and narcissism. All three videos include aspects of these theories and still all three videos are typical of their own genre. The expectation is that POP videos will be more hyperconscious in terms of the appearance of the main artist, Carly Rae Jepsen definitely has a more polished persona than Plan B in the R&B category.
However, hyperconsciousness is not all about having a squeaky clean image, it is simply being over aware of how you are perceived. Therefore all artists in the videos seem to be hyperconscious as they all maintain a certain image and reputation for their fans and the media.
Only one video has a clear inter-textual reference, L I F E G O E S O N - Noah and the Whale, of Marylin Monroe.

None of the other videos contained an obvious inter-textual reference which links the audience to another medium, although you could say this one is also a pastiche as the woman has a costume and look which resembles Marylin Monroe.

We would also think that the video containing the most narcussism would be the POP video, however there are not as many close ups of Carly Rae Jepsen as there are of Plan B in the R&B video. This would suggest the artist is more narcussistic because they include more shots of themselves and are more inclined to involve themselves in the whole of the music video.

It seems the video that is classed as 'ALTERNATIVE' or 'INDIE' includes less of Goodwin's codes and conventions than the more mainstream genres. Whilst Noah and the Whale only really include inter-textuality and hyperconsciousness, Plan B's video is both hyperconscious, narcussistic and could be said to have intertextual references to a film. Carly Rae Jepsen's includes hyperconsciousness, narcussism and parody/pastiche - the most mainstream genre with the most of Goodwin's theories.

R&B

DEEPEST SHAME - PLAN B

Plan B has a certain reputation as he has been around for quite some time. People therefore have expectations for his music videos, which usually tell a story but include some performance as well. The demographic for this artist is hard to define as many of his fans would have followed him since he started almost 10 years ago, however as he brings out new songs that may appeal to a younger audience, he gains more fans and so the target audience for this video would be boys and girls from the ages of 16 upwards, most probably stopping at around 26 years old. The 'Deepest Shame' video is both narrative and performance based. The genre of the song is R&B and this video is typical of that genre, it uses special effects and is quite fast paced. The camera tracks the main character, who the song is about just as the video follows her story, and the shot usually tells the story of the lyrics. It uses montage editing, where there are a number of shots layered on top of others or a story that is quite jumbled; not necessarily showing in chronological order. There are a lot of close ups used to urge the viewer to pay attention to detail like the words painted all over the girls body. Jump cuts are used as an ellipsis in this video, such as a long shot of some people are coming out of a shop and then jumping to a mid shot of them suddenly walking down the road. Special effects such as dissolve and fade are used to transition frrom shot to shot, e.g. when the girls face dissolves into a cloud under water. The lighting and set throughout the video is quite dark which connotes pain or suffering, with warehouse-looking sets and flashing lights to make the visual aspect quite interesting, i would say this is also quite typical of R&B videos as the narrative of the song is usually quite dark. There are no credits or intertitles at the end which state who or where the video was produced.

INDIE

L I F E G O E S O N - NOAH AND THE WHALE

The genre of 'L I F E G O E S O N' is indie, unlike the other genres i have analysed, this video is mainly narrative based. However, the narritive in this video is montage editing because the storyline is quite jumbled and does not fully match the lyrics. All the performance based shots are on the chorus except for when the video concept changes and they are performing on a stage, the video is then a performance inside a performance. The lighting in this videeo is mainly quite dark, as the storyline is also quite dark, however there are moments where there is quite alot of light such as when the band are performing on stage and bright lights surround them, this denotes performance. The intertextual reference to Marilyn Monroe through the main girl's appearance connects the viewer to the story of Marilyn which a lot of people are familiar with as she is an iconic public figure. There is not a lot of movement frrom the performers as they simply sit on a sofa and sing most of the time. The camera shots used are mainly group shots with long shots, a few close ups to highlight the detail in facial expressions etc... and some shot reverse shots so show both points of view from two people in some cases. The demographic for this band and their music video is quite a wide variety of people, they are considered alternative music and therefore fall under the niche category - the longtail theory may also apply to them with help of Web 2.0 and YouTube to promote their music. The target audience would be ages 15 - 20's because the lyric content is quite explicit... not in terms of expletives but in terms of storyline however the tune is quite catchy which would attract a younger audience as it is a sort of nursery rhyme, jolly tune. There are not many special effects except maybe a green screen or CGI in some places and there are no credits at the end of the video which state who the producers are and which record label the band is with.
